Killers of women rewarded with impunity
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Sept. 27, 2024 - by BAHARIN LEHIB
<<Killers of women rewarded with impunity in Afghanistan
The rate of femicide, gender-based violence and child marriage is on the
rise in Afghanistan ruled by the Taliban. The killers of women are
rewarded with impunity in the country.
News Center- Women are killed, subjected to violence and all kinds of
rights violations in Afghanistan ruled by the Taliban. On August 21,
2024, the Taliban authorities announced the ratification of a detailed
<Law on the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice,> which bans
women from raising their voices in public, and requires Afghan women to
cover their faces. Several days ago, 16 women were arrested in
Afghanistan's Khost province for <not wearing the proper hijab>. In the
country, the policies of the Taliban pave the way for femicide and they
reward the killers of women with impunity. Deepening poverty in
Afghanistan causes families to marry off their daughters at an early
age. In addition, there is an increase in the rate of domestic violence
and femicide in the country and the media underrepresents crimes against
women because the Taliban control the media. NuJINHA compiled news from
local and national newspapers, news websites and news agencies in
Afghanistan to list the cases of suspicious deaths among women and
femicide in September.
*September 3: A young woman named Saliha died under suspicious
circumstances in the district of Tiora, Ghor province. Her death was
recorded as <suicide>.
*September 5: One woman was killed by her husband in the village of
Daman, Kandahar Province.
*September 6: A 20-year-old woman identified as Bibi Amina was killed by
her husband in the town of Spin Boldak, Kandahar province.
*September 8: One woman was killed at her home in the district of
Shirin-Tagab, Faryab Province.
*September 9: A young woman died under suspicious circumstances in
Afghanistan's Badghis province. According to the local reports, she had
been subjected to domestic violence. Her death was recorded as
<suicide>.
*September 10: A woman named Kamila was killed by her husband in the
district of Khwaja Sabz Posh, Faryab province.
*September 13: A 20-year-old woman died under suspicious circumstances
in the village of Qades, Badghis province. According to the local
reports, the young woman killed herself because she had been subjected
to domestic violence.
*September 17: An 11-year-old girl named Fatima died under suspicious
circumstances in Maymana, the capital city of Faryab province. Her death
was recorded as <suicide>.
*September 18: A 25-year-old woman was killed by an unknown person in
the town of Qala-e-Naw, Badghis Province.>>

revolution through education
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Sept. 27, 2024 - by BERÇEM CUDI
<<Women in Kobane maintain gains of revolution through education
Women of North and East Syria maintain the gains of the Rojava
Revolution through education by founding academies.
Kobane- Kongra Star, an umbrella organization of women's organizations
in northeastern Syria, has held many activities for women in order to
participate in all facets of life. Kongra Star Education Committee has
founded academies in the region to maintain the gains of the Rojava
Revolution through education. In July 2018, the committee opened the
Martyr Şilan Academy in Kobanê to carry out education activities for
women. Named after Şilan Baqi, a female fighter who lost her life while
fighting ISIS, the committee has carried out education activities for
women for six years.
NuJINHA spoke to Firyal Temi, Spokesperson of the academy, about the
activities of the academy.
'We maintain our activities despite the attacks'
The aim of the academy is to develop women both scientifically and
ideologically, Firyal Temi said. "The academy was founded in the
Euphrates Canton for both Kurdish and Arab women. The academy is a space
for women to come together and receive education and improve themselves.
We maintain our education activities despite the ongoing Turkish threats
and attacks."
'We benefit from the perspectives of Abdullah Ocalan'
We benefit from the perspectives of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan while
determining the educational materials, Firyal Temi stressed, adding:
"While determining our educational materials, we use different materials
especially for young women. We give education on many topics such as
women's history, sexism, the ideology of leader Apo, Jineology,
revolution, self-defense, criticism and self-criticism."
'Education is important to understand the male-state system'
The academy has also carried out education activities for men. "For
thousands of years, women have been murdered and alienated from their
own reality by the male-state system. We also carry out education
activities for men to change the patriarchal mindset. As the academy and
women, we believe that women are capable of changing their society and
play a leading role in society. As women, we believe in our strength and
will. We maintain the gains of the Rojava revolution through education."
'Being a part of this success is meaningful for us'
"I participate in such education activities for the first time," said
Zeyneb Mamo, one of the women receiving education at the academy. "I
want to receive an ideological education to improve myself. Education is
more important than bread and water. The revolution in Rojava is our
revolution. Being a part of this success is meaningful for us." >>

<<Human rights defenders: Occupation increases suspicious deaths in
Afrin
There is an alarming increase in suspicious deaths among women, recorded
as <suicides>, in Afrin, controlled by the Turkish state and
Turkish-backed factions, according to human rights defenders.
Shahba- Civilians and women in the occupied Afrin have been subjected to
many rights violations, including arbitrary arrest, all forms of
violence and rape, by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions. The
crimes committed by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions in
Afrin cause people to experience many psychological and social problems.
'The Turkish state commits crimes in Afrin'
Women in Afrin and other areas controlled by the Turkish state have been
subjected to many rights violations, said Hehan Eli, a member of the
Afrin-Shahba Human Rights Organization. "The Turkish state commits
crimes that violate international law and conventions to change the
demographic structure and displace people in Afrin. The Turkish-backed
factions commit many rights violations despite international conventions
protecting women. They use various inhuman methods against people and
women, including rape, massacre, torture, blackmail, looting and insults
in basements and their secret prisons."
'More than 1,200 women have been kidnapped in Afrin'
Hehan Eli also spoke about the statistics of crimes committed against
women in Afrin since 2018. "More than 1,200 women have been kidnapped in
Afrin since 2018 and the whereabouts of many is not yet known. The
number of women subjected to sexual violence in and outside detention
centers is over 80. Many women and girls are killed in different ways
and all these crimes remain unclear. Some women are killed in the name
of <honor>.
'There is an alarming increase in suspicious deaths among women'
Afrin is not a safe place for women anymore, Hehan Eli emphasized.
"Women also experience many psychological and social problems due to the
chaotic environment caused by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed
factions in Afrin. Women cannot go out in fear of being killed due to
this chaotic environment. People having been kidnapped by Turkish-backed
factions suffer from psychological problems. In recent years, there is
an alarming increase in suspicious deaths and suicide rates among women
in Afrin."
'The occupation aims to destroy the values of society'
The people living in Afrin are even asked to pay an amount of money for
their olive trees, Hehan Eli said. "The people say that the
Turkish-backed factions go unpunished despite committing crimes against
them. The occupation of Afrin also paves the way for child marriage;
parents marry off their daughters at a young age out of fear of these
factions. The occupation in Afrin increases the rates of suicide,
divorce, polygamy and child marriage."
'The aim of all these violations is to break the will of women'
The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions commit crimes against
humanity in Afrin, Fatima Lakto, a member of the Peoples' Assembly in
Shahba, told NuJINHA. "There are human rights organizations documenting
the rights violations in Afrin. The aim of all these violations is to
break the will of women in Afrin because the Turkish state wants to take
revenge on the women who achieved victory against ISIS. The women living
in Afrin have been subjected to all forms of violence, including
physical and psychological violence." Speaking about the recent increase
in the suspicious deaths and suicide rates among women in Afrin," she
said, "International human rights organizations should take an urgent
action to end the crimes committed against civilians, especially women,
in Afrin. They should take the necessary attitude against the Turkish
state and its factions to protect women’s rights in Afrin." >>

Muna Yusif
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Sept. 25, 2024 - by RONIDA HACI
<<'The Syrian government and the AANES must come to the table for the
future of Syria'
"The Turkish state uses the Adana Agreement signed in 1998 for its own
interests. The Syrian government must come to the table with the AANES
for the future of Syria."
Hasakah- The Turkish state brings forward some old agreements and
alliances to legitimize its occupying attacks on North and East Syria.
The Adana Agreement concluded between Turkey and Syria in 1998 is one of
these agreements.
'This agreement poses a threat to the future of Syria'
The Adana agreement was a result of mediation efforts by Egypt and Iran,
said Muna Yusif, board member of the Future Syria Party. "The demands of
the Turkish state were accepted and the Adana agreement was made between
Turkey and Syria in the city of Adana in 1998. The agreement paves the
way for the occupation of Syrian territories. It was an agreement to
realize the interests of the occupying Turkish state. Even today, the
Turkish state makes plans to occupy the region (North and East Syria).
The Turkish state and its alliances have already occupied some areas in
Syria due to this agreement. Therefore, we do not recognize this
agreement and say that the liberation of the occupied areas is one of
the fundamental ways to resolve the Syrian crisis.
'Women should not allow foreign intervention in Syria'
In her speech, Muna Yusif pointed to the role of women in resolution of
the Syrian crisis and said, "We call on all women making great efforts
to resolve the crisis not to allow foreign intervention in Syria because
the liberation of the occupied areas can only resolve this crisis and
only the Syrian people can resolve this crisis. The people of Syria have
paid high prices for years. The displacement, massacres and attacks
continue. Today, every woman's duty is to educate society and tells that
the Adana agreement and the attempt to renew it pose a threat to the
future of Syria."
'The Turkish state commits crimes against humanity in the occupied
areas'
The Turkish state commits crimes against humanity in the occupied areas,
such as Afrin, Serekaniye (Ras al-Ayn), Al Bab and Azaz, Mûsa Yusif
emphasized, adding:
"In the areas controlled by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed
factions, the people are subjected to all forms of violence, killed,
arrested and kidnapped. The Turkish state aims to deepen the Syrian
crisis by using different excuses and agreements. The reason for the
violence and crises in these areas is the Turkish state itself. If the
Turkish state wants to solve the Syrian crisis, it must withdraw its
forces from Syria so that the Syrian people can have a comfortable and
safe life. However, everyone knows that the Turkish state never leaves
wherever it enters."
Call on the Syrian government to fulfil its responsibility
Muna Yusif also called on the Syrian government to fulfil its
responsibility towards the people of Syria. "We call on the Syrian
government not to make an agreement with the Turkish state because the
Turkish state is an occupying state. The Syrian government must fulfill
its responsibility towards the people of Syria by liberating the
occupied areas and preventing the crimes committed against its people.
We say once again that the Syrian government must come to the table with
the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria for the future of
Syria." >>

Kongra Star
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Sept. 25, 2024
<<Kongra Star: The decision of the CoM serves as an approval to torture
Kongra Star has released a written statement, criticizing the decision
of the Committee of Ministers (CoM) "for monitoring" the implementation
of the ECHR decision about Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan for a year.
News Center- Kongra Star has released a written statement on the
decision taken by the Committee of Ministers (CoM), the Council of
Europe's decision-making body, about the isolation imposed on Kurdish
leader Abdullah Ocalan at the meeting held on September 17. "The
decision of the committee serves as an approval to the torture in Imrali,"
the statement said.
The letter of Kongra Star is as follows:
"The historical resistance that leader Abdullah Ocalan has been waging
in the prison of Imrali for 26 years is the strongest response to the
political, military and cultural and genocidal policies that the world's
sovereign regimes and their tools have been implementing in the region.
The regime of Erdogan has been committing a genocide against the Kurdish
people and the people demanding freedom. Leader Abdullah Öcalan
introduced the idea of a democratic nation and a democratic
confederation to the Middle East and sees women's freedom and women’s
important role in building a political-ethnic society. An international
campaign demanding "Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan and a political solution
to the Kurdish question" was launched to highlight the importance of
leader Abdullah Ocalan's philosophy serving the whole of humanity and
offering fundamental solutions to problems and conflicts. The policies
of torture and isolation implemented against our leader by making
baseless excuses are against human values and the human rights
principles, showing the fascist mindset of the AKP-MHP dictatorship. On
September 17, 2024, the Committee of Ministers held a meeting to discuss
the isolation imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan in the prison
island of Imrali and the violation of his "right to hope", announcing
that the committee would issue an interim decision in September 2025
after monitoring the implementation of the ECHR decision for a year. As
Kongra Star, we call on the Council of Europe to review the decision of
the Committee of Ministers and on the international community, the UN
and law organizations to fulfil their responsibilities to end right
violations against leader Abdullah Ocalan. We also call on all
socialists, democratic forces, women's organizations and movements to
strengthen the common struggle by supporting the international campaign
demanding freedom for leader Abdullah Ocalan." >>

Free healthcare in Shahba
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Sept. 25, 2024 - by HESNA MIHEMED
<<Free healthcare in Shahba despite siege and attacks
The Health Committee of North and East Syria provides free health
services to people in Shahba despite the siege imposed by the Syrian
government and the ongoing Turkish attacks.
Shahba- Thousands of people were displaced from Afrin to Shahba when the
Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions occupied Afrin. However, the
displaced people of Afrin have been facing the siege imposed by the
Syrian government and the ongoing Turkish attacks on Shahba. The health
sector is most affected by the siege because the Syrian government
forces have blocked the entry of medical supplies and medications. The
Health Committee in Shahba/Afrin Canton has provided free health
services to people at hospitals and health centers in Shahba despite
limited resources.
'The Syrian government blocks the entry of essential supplies' "The
people of Afrin have faced various challenges after being displaced to
Shahba," said Eliya Mihemed, Co-chair of the committee. "The Syrian
government has blocked the entry of essential supplies, including
medical supplies, to break the resistance of the people in the region."
It provides free health services
In Shahba, there are currently two hospitals and six health centers.
"Despite all the challenges, the Avrîn Hospital has provided health
services to people for six years. The health centers in districts
provide first aid services to patients until they reach the hospital.
The ongoing water outages cause the spread of diseases among people. The
committee provides free health services to people at hospitals and
health centers."
Call to lift the siege
Eliya Mihemed indicated that they did not close the doors of Avrin
Hospital to the people despite the siege and limited resources. "Despite
the lack of medical supplies, the Avrin Hospital is still open to
people, providing free health services. We do our best to keep the
hospital open. We call on international organizations to take an urgent
action and put pressure on the Syrian government to lift the siege." >>

<<Prof Kariane Westrheim: Ocalan is a symbol of resistance against
oppression globally
"Abdullah Ocalan's freedom is important not only as a symbol of Kurdish
rights but also as a step toward achieving broader peace and justice in
the region and beyond."
News Center- On October 10, 2023, an international campaign demanding
"freedom for Abdullah Ocalan and a political solution to the Kurdish
question" was launched in 74 countries with the support of NGOs, unions,
political parties and writers. As part of the campaign, Kurdish people
and their friends in four parts of Kurdistan and many countries have
held marches, protests and released press statements. On July 26, 2024,
69 Nobel Laureates wrote a letter to the Committee of Ministers of the
Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, the European
Committee for the Prevention of Torture and the UN Human Rights
Committee for Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. On September 17, 2024, the
Committee of Ministers (CoM), the Council of Europe's decision-making
body, held a meeting to discuss the isolation imposed on Kurdish leader
Abdullah Ocalan in the prison island of Imrali and the violation of his
"right to hope". The life sentence against Kurdish leader Abdullah
Ocalan without prospect of parole or release is against the principle of
"right to hope", the committee indicated on September 20, announcing
that the committee would issue an interim decision in September 2025
after monitoring the implementation of the ECHR decision for a year. In
an interview with NuJINHA, Kariane Westrheim, professor emerita at the

Vigil against isolation
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Sept. 24, 2024 - by NUPELDA DENIZ
<<Vigil against isolation in Makhmour continues
"The physical freedom of leader Apo is also our freedom," said women
participating in the vigil started in the Makhmour refugee camp about a
year ago, demanding freedom for Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Makhmour- Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan has been held in total
isolation in the prison island of Imrali for 26 years and no news has
been received from him since March 25, 2021. The vigil demanding started
in the Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour refugee camp) to demand his
physical freedom on July 20, 2023 continues. NuJINHA spoke to three
women participating in the vigil.
'They use the isolation to annihilate the Kurdish people'
"I have been participating in the vigil to demand the physical freedom
of leader Apo (Abdullah Ocalan)," said Roj Yıldıztan. "Leader Apo has
not been allowed to see his lawyers and family members. The isolation
imposed on leader Apo is an isolation imposed on the Kurdish people.
They (Turkish authorities) use the isolation to annihilate the Kurdish
people. As the Kurdish people, we demand the physical freedom of our
leader. We must understand what leader Apo asks us and do it. We will
keep holding protests until we ensure his freedom. As the Kurdish
people, we must fight more for leader Apo and our freedom because what
leader Apo asks us is to have a free will."
'We will not give up resisting'
Roj Yıldıztan also pointed to the ongoing Turkish attacks on the camp.
"The Turkish state attacked the camp twice a week. The ongoing Turkish
attacks on the camp affect all people, especially children and women.
Our people, particularly young people, should resist the attacks because
the Turkish state aims to annihilate us. We will not give up resisting
until our leader has his physical freedom."
'The physical freedom of leader Apo is also our freedom'
The vigil demands the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan,
said Duygu Benek, one of the women participating in the vigil. "An
aggravated isolation has been imposed on leader Apo for 26 years. For
four years, we have received no news from him. The Turkish state has no
tolerance for the resisting Kurdish people. It uses all kinds of inhuman
methods to attack the Kurdish people. As young women, we will resist to
fail its attacks. The vigil started in the camp demanding the physical
freedom of leader Apo. We, the youth, must fulfill our duties and
responsibilities and strengthen our struggle for his freedom. The
physical freedom of leader Apo is also our freedom. I call on all
Kurdish young men and women to stand up against all kinds of attacks and
resist them."
'We must ensure his physical freedom'
Dicle Benek believes that the isolation imposed on Kurdish leader
Abdullah Ocalan is also imposed on all Kurdish people. "The vigil in the
camp has continued for more than a year. As young women of Makhmour, we
demand the physical freedom of leader Apo. The isolation imposed on our
leader is also imposed on all Kurdish people. The problems in the Middle
East will be solved with the freedom of Leader Apo. As young women and
Kurdish youth, we must fulfill our responsibilities and ensure the
physical freedom of our leader." >>
