Women and girls face increased risks of violence in Yemen
Jinha - Womens News Agency - May 30 , 2024
<<Over 6 million women and girls face increased risks of violence in
Yemen
Over half of Yemen's population, 18.2 million people, require some form
of humanitarian assistance in 2024, with recent regional conflict
dynamics escalating risks, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
said in its report on Wednesday.
News Center- The ongoing conflict in Yemen has exacerbated the ongoing
malnutrition crisis in Yemen. Over half of Yemen's population, 18.2
million people, require some form of humanitarian assistance in 2024,
with recent regional conflict dynamics escalating risks, the United
Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says in its Yemen Situation Report.
Over six million women and girls face increased risk of violence
According to the report, more than 6.36 million women and girls face
increased risks of various types of violence, including harmful
practices. In 2024, around 17.8 million people require healthcare
assistance, including 5.5 million women needing reproductive health
services and 2.7 million pregnant or breastfeeding women needing
treatment for acute malnutrition. Only one in five healthcare facilities
offer maternal and child health services, highlighting the urgent need
for increased capacity.
Since the beginning of the year, UNFPA's response has reached over
350,000 individuals with life-saving reproductive healthcare, protection
information and services and emergency relief, with support to 103
health facilities, 36 safe spaces, eight shelters and seven specialized
mental health centres, the report says. Among the 4.56 million displaced
in Yemen, women and children constitute an estimated 80 per cent.
Insufficient access to comprehensive services for gender-based violence
compounds the issue, with rural areas lacking such services by 90 per
cent. <In 2024, UNFPA aims to raise US$70 million to maintain its
critical support for women and girls. UNFPAs appeal is currently funded
at 37 per cent,> the report says.>>

elections, is getting ready to establish neighborhood commissions and
city councils in Kurdish cities.
Amed- Special war policies that started in Kurdish cities especially

Council addressed these policies and it is getting ready to neighborhood

led both this victory and the elections.>
'We determined a road map'
Indicating that they, as women, came together after this victory and
determined a road map, Berivan Bahçeci said, <After the elections, every
organization had to go through an evaluation phase. As the DBP Women's

by women, what women needed in cities and districts and what we had done
and what we will do.>
'The people are determined to protect themselves'
Berivan Bahçeci pointed out that the people used their self-defense
following the exposure of special war policies. <The people united
against these policies. The resistance of the people revealed the

any attack against them. What is important is that this society also
organizes against these attacks.>

Sudanese women learn how to fight
Jinha - Womens News Agency - May 28 , 2024 - by AYA IBRAHIM
<<Sudanese women learn how to fight in military training camps
Sudanese women learn how to fight in military training camps to protect
themselves from being rape, kidnapped and sold as slaves.
Sudan- The civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the
Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted in Sudan has entered its second year.
Women and children are extremely vulnerable to this war in the country
suffering from the world's largest displacement crisis. Since the war
started on April 15, 2023, Sudanese women have been subjected to serious
rights violations such as rape, harassment and kidnapping. They have
been sold as slaves for the global sex trade. In August 2023, the first
training camp for women and girls in the River Nile state was opened.
The women and girls joining the camp learn how to use weapons and fight
in order to protect themselves and their family. Women are the most
affected by the war, said Samia Al-Tayeb Abdel Karim, a dentist and
secretary of the Sudanese Women's Initiative. <I live in Khartoum but I
came here to learn how to fight. Due to this war, women have lost their
homes and jobs. The lack of security and stability is one of the
important reasons for women to learn how to use weapons. The Nusseibeh
Sisters was formed in 1990 as the first Sudanese womens combat
battalion during the regime of Omar al Bashir. The camp is named after
it.>
'I am here to protect women'
Alaa Saleh Taher, a 22-year-old student at the Omdurman Ahlia
University, decided to join the camp in August, four months after the
war started in Sudan. She first learned how to use weapons for 45 days.
<About 285 women and girls have learned how to fight and use weapons in
the camp,> she told us. <I am here to protect myself, my family and
women from all kinds of attack, threat and violence. All women and girls
should join the camp to protect themselves.>
'There is still hope'
Since the civil war started in Sudan, 157 cases of violence against
women have been recorded, said Salima Ishaq, member of the Unit for
Combating Violence against Women under Sudan's Ministry of Social
Development. <The real numbers are probably higher. The families of
women, who were kidnapped, raped and subjected to violence, do not
report because they are afraid of being stigmatized in society. What
women are subjected to is very difficult but there is still hope.> >>

At the hearing of the retrial against journalist Nurcan Yalçın, the
judge ruled to ask the police whether there are other witnesses to
testify against the journalist.
News Center- Journalist Nurcan Yalçın was sentenced to three years,
seven months and 22 days in prison on charges of <Membership in an
illegal organization> and <propagandizing for an illegal organization>
on November 22, 2021. The Turkish Court of Appeal reversed the judgment

workshops on gender equality for students
Jinha - Womens News Agency - May 27 , 2024 - by IKHLAS Al-HAMROUNI
<<Tunisian teacher organizes workshops on gender equality for students
Tunisian teacher Samah Abdellaoui organizes workshops on gender equality
for students, aiming at raising awareness about gender-based violence.
Tunisia- The recent increase in gender-based violence has mobilized
women's organizations and human rights defenders to fight it. According
to recent reports, almost half of Tunisian women have experienced some
form of gender-based violence at some point in their lives. A 2022
social study titled, <Violence against women in Sidi Bouzid Governorate>
revealed that the phenomenon of violence is one of the most serious
social issues and it becomes a more serious issue due to the patriarchal
mindset. As part of the study, 700 women were interviewed, despite their
different educational levels, women are subjected to various forms of
violence, according to the study. More than 49% married women were
subjected to violence, more than 34 single women were subjected to
violence in the province in 2022. Samah Abdellaoui, a teacher at a
middle school in Sidi Bouzid, decided to offer a workshop series on
gender equality to her students in order to raise awareness about
gender-based violence.
Workshops for students
Stating that the statistics reveal that more women are subjected to
violence in the province every day, she said, <This phenomenon also
affects children. Therefore, I decided to launch an initiative to fight
violence against women and raise awareness among children.> Samah
Abdellaoui helps her students to write articles and prepare posters on
gender-based violence. <We also post the stories of survivors of
gender-based violence on social media to raise awareness.>
'Violence negatively affects children's social and psychological
well-being'
Raising children's awareness of gender equality is crucial in preventing
violence against women, Samah Abdellaoui stressed. <I chose the age
group 10-15 years because I know that raising awareness of children
about the negative effects of violence against women should start at an
early age. Teaching children the values such as gender equality,
kindness, non-violence, and respecting others at an early age is
important because violence against women also negatively affects
children's social and psychological well-being.>
'The students learn the forms of violence against women'
Detailing the purpose of her initiative, Samah Abdellaoui said, <I
taught them that they should help their mothers in doing household
chores. Then, we made brochures and banners about why children should
help their mothers and published them on social media platforms. At the
beginning, children looked for photos showing the victims of violence.
As teachers, we told them that women are subjected to not only physical
violence but also many forms of violence such as economic, sexual and
political violence. Each student chose one of the forms of violence and
made banners.>
'We organize the workshops so that children can understand the
seriousness of the issue'
Samah Abdellaoui works with other women teachers at the school to
organize the workshops. <We organize the workshops so that children can
understand the seriousness of the issue and change their behavior to
have an equal society. Such workshops should be organized at every
school to have a future without violence.> >>
