<<'Women of Mount Kizwan have regained their identity thanks to Kongra
Star'
Since Mount Kizwan was liberated from ISIS in 2015, women have rebuilt
their lives with the support of Kongra Star.
Hasakah- On May 6, the People's Defense Units (YPG) and the Women's
Defense Units (YPJ) launched <Operation Commander Rubar Qamishlo> to
liberate the western Cizre Canton from ISIS. Mount Kizwan, also known as
Mount Abdulaziz, was liberated from ISIS by the YPG/YPJ in the same
year. For nine years, the region has been controlled by the Autonomous
Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). The tomb of Abdul Aziz,
a descendant of Abdul-Qadir Gilani, was located in the mountain, which
has historical importance for the Kurdish people as well as Muslims.
When Mount Kizwan was handed over to ISIS by Al Nusra Front, many
historical places of the mountain were destroyed. According to local
sources, the tomb of Abdul Aziz and his son were blown up by ISIS on
April 1, 2014.
'There was a world of men before liberation'
Sewsen Suleyman, member of the Economy Committee of Xera Council, told
us how the life of women was before the liberation of Mount Kizwan and
its surroundings. <During the rule of the Baathist regime, women had no
economic independence; they were always oppressed. Then, the Al Nusra
Front began to occupy the region. At that time, families did not allow
women and girls to go to school or work for security reasons,> Sewsen
Süleyman said. <We could not even go out to harvest cotton. At that
time, you could not see women anywhere, in the streets, towns and in
front of houses. You could only see men. There was a world of men before
the liberation of the region.> The region has been ruled by women since
its liberation, Sewsen Suleyman emphasized, adding: <Women are now free
in all facets of life, including economy. The transition from slavery to
freedom is an indescribable feeling. Women have realized many projects
such as agriculture, baking and sewing projects. The women said, 'We
also can do it' and took a step towards a commune economy. Since our
country is under economic attack and siege, women should develop
projects and start cooperatives to alleviate the impact of this crisis
on society.>
'Being able to vote for women candidates gives strength'
Women organize themselves today thanks to the ideology of Kurdish leader
Abdullah Ocalan, said Cewahir Mihemed, member of Kongra Star. <We
organize seminars and meetings to support women. As Kongra Star, we have
solved many social issues, especially regarding women. Since women are
subjected to all forms of violence, we carry out activities to give
information about women’s rights. Women have regained their identity
thanks to Kongra Star. We follow in the footsteps of Beritan Cudi, who
sacrificed herself for the freedom of the people and women of Kizwan.
Women play a leading role in all facets of life and they will play their
leading role in the municipal elections to be held on June 11. Being
able to vote for women candidates gives us strength. We will stand with
each other and preserve our identity to build a better future.>
'Women feel better'
Şeyima Ehmed, member of the health center in the region, mentioned the
problems faced by women in the health sector. <Women were deprived of
their right to health when the region was controlled by ISIS. They could
not go to hospitals, health centers or pharmacies. Women were mentally
depressed. The situation is different now; women enjoy health services.
Women feel better now. We provide health care services to them and
organize seminars about women's health.> >>

<<'Where Did You Take Them?': Campaign against enforced disappearances
in Sudan
Sudanese civil society groups launched the <Where Did You Take Them>
campaign in 2023 to highlight the issue of the many enforced
disappearances in Sudan since the outbreak of the war in the country.
Sudan- More than 14,000 civilians have been killed and some 8,5 million
people have been forced to flee their homes since conflict between the
Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted
in Sudan on April 15, 2023. Since the outbreak of the conflict. Enforced
disappearance has been a common practice in Sudan. In October 2023,
Sudanese civil society groups launched a campaign called <Where Did You
Take Them> to highlight this issue. The names of the civil society
groups initiated the campaign are: The Sudanese Group for Victims of
Enforced Disappearances, the Missing Initiative, the Sudan Democratic
Front Lawyers (SDLF), the SIHA Network, the No to Women's Oppression
Initiative, the Sudanese Journalists Network, the Sudanese Visual
Artists Association, and the Sudanese Tweeters Platform. Lawyer Rania
Adam told NuJINHA that the SDLF participated in the campaign after being
invited by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human
Rights to contribute to the reports prepared by the UN Committee on
Enforced Disappearances, noting that Sudan signed and ratified the UN
Convention Against Torture and the International Convention for the
Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances in 2021.
At least 990 cases of enforced disappearance in Sudan conflict
The Missing Initiative, a Sudanese civil society group, released a
report in April 2024. The initiative documented at least 990 cases of
enforced disappearance since the conflict erupted between the Sudanese
Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Among the victims were 95 women and at least 50 children. <We launched
the campaign with the aim of shedding light on this issue. Enforced
disappearance is a crime against humanity under national and
international laws.> Speaking about the report by the Missing
Initiative, she said, <The number of enforced disappearances is higher.
Some families have no opportunity to report the missing of their
relatives.>
'The officers who conduct the investigations and arrest people are the
same'
Salwa Saeed, member of the SDLF, told us that the campaign was launched
to shed light on the issue of enforced disappearance and to know their
whereabouts. <Sudan has been suffering from enforced disappearance for
over 30 years. The issue of enforced disappearance has been
deteriorating in recent years. According to the testimonies of the
survivors, about 800 people have been held in detention centers. The
total number of the victims of enforced disappearance is unknown because
the officers, who conduct the investigations and arrest people, are the
same.> >>

Sinan Aygul
CPJ - May 22, 2024
Turkish prosecutors charge journalist Sinan Aygul for threatening his
attackers
Istanbul, May 22, 2024 - Turkish authorities must drop charges against
journalist Sinan Aygul alleging that he threatened the men who attacked
him, the Committee to Protect Journalists said Wednesday. In June 2023,
Aygul, chief editor of the privately owned local news website Bitlis
News and chair of the local trade group Bitlis Journalists Society, was
hospitalized after he was attacked by Yücel Baysalı and Engin Kaplan,
bodyguards of the then-mayor in the eastern city of Tatvan. The two were
released from jail while the trial was ongoing and received suspended
sentences, ultimately spending less than three months behind bars. Aygul,
meanwhile, was sentenced to two months and five days in prison in
January 2024 on charges of insulting Baysalı and Kaplan; he is appealing
the sentence and has not been taken into custody. Now, the journalist
faces additional charges related to the incident. On May 15, prosecutors
filed suit against Aygul and his brother Ahmet Aygul in the 1st Tatvan
Court of Penal Instance alleging that they threatened Baysalı and Kaplan
twice on September 30, according to reports and court documents, which
CPJ reviewed. The trial is set to begin September 18, 2024, Aygul told
CPJ. If convicted of threatening the complainants, the pair could face
two to five years in prison. <Turkish journalist Sinan Aygul was
brutally assaulted by two men who spent little time behind bars before
being released with delayed sentences, and now the journalist faces
charges for insulting and threatening these same two men,> said Ozgur
Ogret, CPJ's Turkey representative. <Turkish authorities should
prioritize ending violence against journalists instead of heaping
charges on the victim. It's not too late to do the right thing.> The
indictment, prepared by the Tatvan Chief Public Prosecutor's Office,
said that Aygul and his brother Ahmet Aygul allegedly threatened Baysalı
and Kaplan in the presence of a security guard at a municipal building
in Tatvan on September 30, 2023. Aygül told CPJ that he and his brother
were at the building that day to obtain security camera footage that he
believed would prove that the attackers did not act alone; he said when
they were refused access to the footage they left without threatening
anyone. The indictment also said that the same day, Ahmet Aygul
allegedly sent threatening messages to Baysalı using the Instagram
account 'ahmt.aygl.' The indictment cited testimony of an unnamed person
who allegedly saw the threatening messages. Aygul said that the charges
did not provide proof of his brother's connection with the account. CPJ
reviewed a report from the Turkish police's cybercrimes unit which could
not determine the owner of the Instagram account, which had no posts and
four followers. Aygul told CPJ that he believed that former mayor Mehmet
Emin Geylani ordered the June 2023 attack in response to his coverage of
alleged corruption in the municipality. Geylani, of the ruling Justice
and Development Party, has denied any involvement with the attack.
CPJ was unable to locate contact information for the lawyers for Baysalı
and Kaplan.
CPJ emailed the Tatvan Chief Public Prosecutor's Office for comment but
didn't receive any reply.
On February 28, 2023, a court found Aygul guilty of violating Turkey's
disinformation law and sentenced him to 10 months in prison. He was the
first journalist to be arrested and prosecuted under this law, and
Turkey's Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the verdict on May 10,
2024.>>
