<<Women keep working despite ongoing Turkish attacks
Hasakah- The genocidal attacks of the Turkish state on North and East
Syria continue. NuJINHA spoke to Madlen Al-Ibed, Spokesperson of Kongra
Star in Til Temir, about the recent Turkish attacks on the region.
Madlen Al-Ibed thinks that the ongoing Turkish attacks target the
achievements of the women's revolution in Rojava. <We will resist the
attacks,> she said.
'Civilians, towns, villages are targeted'
Speaking about the recent Turkish drone strikes on North and East Syria,
Madlen Al-Ibed said, <Our villages and towns have been targeted by the
Turkish attacks and bombardments since the occupation of Serekaniye (Ras
al-Ayn). Civilians, towns, villages and civilian infrastructure are
targeted by the Turkish attacks.>
<Our activities have been negatively affected>
Emphasizing that the ongoing attacks have negatively affected their
activities for women, Madlen Al-Ibed said, <We started educational
activities for women and for all groups of society; however, we have not
been able to focus on these activities due to the ongoing Turkish
attacks. We aim to have a democratic society and change the patriarchal
mentality. Due to the ongoing Turkish attacks, we have not been able to
hold meetings aiming to bring all groups of our society together.>
'The attacks cause an increase in the cases of gender-based violence'
Madlen Al-Ibed thinks that the ongoing Turkish attacks target women's
gains. <The ongoing Turkish attacks cause an increase in the cases of
gender-based violence. The number of femicide, child marriage and
polygamy has been increasing. The patriarchal mindset sees these attacks
as an opportunity to regain its power. These attacks target the
achievements of the women's revolution in Rojava. These attacks are
genocidal attacks.>
Madlen Al-Ibed emphasized that the Turkish state aims to depopulate and
destabilize the region. <The Turkish state has cut off the water of the
Euphrates River and this affects women and all people in the region. The
Turkish state and the invaders aim to prevent us from building a
democratic society.>
They keep working
Due to the ongoing attacks, Kongra Star cannot organize meetings,
seminars and workshops. <But we keep working by visiting women at their
home. We discuss the risks faced by women and try to find solutions.
During our visits, we see how people react to the Turkish attacks. Our
people have not left their homeland until now and they will not leave.
There are thousands of women protecting the women revolution developed
by Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.> >>

<<HRW: Turkish attacks on NE Syria exacerbate humanitarian crisis
News Center- The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has released a report
regarding the Turkish attacks on North and East Syria between October 5
and October 10, 2023. The report includes the information given by the
Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and civic
groups. The strikes on more than 150 locations in north and east Syria
in the governorates of al-Hasakeh, Raqqa, and Aleppo, killed dozens of
people including civilians, and damaged civilian structures, according
to civic groups. According to the AANES, damage to infrastructure caused
by attacks that took place between October 5 and 10 impacted an
estimated 4.3 million people in northeast Syria with at least 18 water
pumping stations and 11 power stations rendered non-operational. <The
people in the region, already facing a severe water crisis, now also
bear the brunt of increased bombardment, exacerbating their struggle to
get essential water supplies,> the report said.
Not first intentional attack
The report also said, <The October 2023 strikes are also not the first
time Turkey appears to have intentionally targeted civilian
infrastructure. Airstrikes in November 2022 also inflicted damage on
densely populated areas and critical infrastructure. Turkey should
urgently stop targeting critical infrastructure necessary for residents'
rights and well-being, including power and water stations.> <By
targeting critical infrastructure across northeast Syria, including
power and water stations, Turkey has flouted its responsibility to
ensure that its military actions do not aggravate the region's already
dire humanitarian crisis,> said Adam Coogle, deputy Middle East director
at Human Rights Watch. <People in al-Hasakeh city and its surroundings,
already facing a severe water crisis for the past four years, must now
also bear the brunt of increased bombardment and destruction,
exacerbating their struggle to get essential water supplies.> >>

<<Women of Elih: We will struggle for our language and culture
Elih (Batman)- Young people showed great interest in the Women's
Festival of Art and Culture, organized by the Sanatça Organization, the
Confederation of Public Workers' Unions (KESK) and the Confederation of
Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) in Elih (Batman) from October
21 to October 22 with the motto, <Jina Azad Hunera Azad/ Free Women,
Free Art>. At the festival, many activities for children such as theater
and musical performances and dance shows were organized. <We have been
struggling to preserve our
culture for years and we will keep struggling,> said a young women
attending the festival.
'Such festivals have been waited for years'
NuJINHA spoke to some young women attending the festival. <A
long-awaited festival is being held in our city,> Narin Erol said, <I
thank all the women, who made great efforts to organize this festival.
This festival is a response to the festivals held in Batman and its
districts by the appointed mayor.
'We will preserve our art and language'
<All people of Batman know that many festivals were organized here
before the appointment of the trustee. For instance, millions attended
the concert of Ciwan Haco. Although this festival is a two-day festival,
I think we will see its effects in the coming days. The people of Batman
need such festivals to be organized. We will preserve our art and
language.> Tuba Demir also thinks that such festivals should be
organized more. <Our city, even this region, needs such events. While
the appointed mayor often organizes festivals in our city, we are not
allowed to organize festivals. This festival makes us happy. I hope such
events will be organized more. Women and young people need such events.
The Kurdish culture and values are targeted by the system carrying out
assimilation policies. As a woman, I can say that the system will never
achieve its purpose. Our people are conscious people who have paid heavy
prices not only in culture and arts but also in many fields. We will
resist the assimilation policies and preserve our values.>
'The trustee organizes only vacuous events'
<As Kurdish women, we always want to attend such festivals,> said Asmin
Kaya. <Our people miss such events. We have been struggling to preserve
our culture for years and we will keep struggling. As a young woman, I
have attended many festivals but this festival reflects my own culture
and language. The appointed trustee organizes only vacuous events.>
'We should unite'
Samya Aratemur thinks that such festivals should be organized in the
city every week. <We should preserve our culture and language against
the oppressive policies. Now, no one speak Kurdish outside; people do
not teach Kurdish to their children anymore. Parents are the first
teachers for children. Parents should teach Kurdish to their children.
We should unite and struggle against assimilation policies.> >>
