<<Live: Mediator Qatar calls for 'clear position' from Israel on
ceasefire proposal
Qatar, which has been mediating a potential truce between Israel and
Hamas, said on Tuesday that it was waiting for a <clear position> from
Israel on a proposed Gaza ceasefire and hostage-release deal outlined by
US President Joe Biden on Monday. Foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari
said there had been no <concrete approval> from either side of the
conflict.
Summary:
Mediator Qatar said Tuesday it was waiting for a <clear position> from
Israel on a proposed Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal outlined by
US President Joe Biden. <We have yet to see a very clear position from
the Israeli government towards the principles laid out by Biden,>
foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said, adding there had been
no <concrete approval> from either side.
Israel believes that more than a third of the remaining Gaza hostages
are dead, a government tally showed on Tuesday, as the United States
sought to advance their recovery under a proposal to wind down the war
with Hamas.
Israeli authorities were battling intense forest fires Tuesday in the
north of the country that broke out shortly after rocket and drone
strikes from neighbouring Lebanon, forcing the partial evacuation of one
town.>>

<<Live: US urges UN Security Council to back Israel-Hamas ceasefire plan
The United States on Monday announced a draft Security Council
resolution supporting the Israel-Hamas ceasefire plan outlined by Joe
Biden last week, urging Hamas to accept it. But it appears that even
within Israel there are major divisions over the plan it allegedly
presented, with two senior ministers threatening to leave Netanyahu's
government if he signs off on the proposal.
Summary:
The United States on Monday announced a draft Security Council
resolution supporting the Israel-Hamas ceasefire plan outlined by Joe
Biden last week, urging Hamas to accept it. But even if Hamas agreed to
terms, it would require Netanyahu to make some difficult political
calculations. Two leading members of his far-right coalition - National
Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich
- have threatened to leave Netanyahu's government if he signs off on the
proposal. That would cause the coalition to collapse.
Four more hostages kidnapped on October 7th were declared dead by the
Israeli army on Monday. About 80 hostages in Gaza are believed to be
alive, alongside the remains of 43 others.
Israeli authorities were battling intense forest fires Tuesday in the
north of the country that broke out shortly after rocket and drone
strikes from neighbouring Lebanon, forcing the partial evacuation of one
town.>>

<<Huge protests call on Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to approve US
ceasefire deal and release hostages
An estimated 120,000 people are believed to have rallied in Tel Aviv to
pressure Israel's government to approve a deal outlined by Joe Biden -
while two far-right ministers have threatened to resign if the proposal
is accepted. Tens of thousands of protesters have rallied in Tel Aviv to
call for the resignation of Benjamin Netanyahu and the immediate release
of hostages. An estimated 120,000 people took to the streets of the
Israeli city to call on the far-right governing coalition to accept a
ceasefire deal outlined by Joe Biden on Friday, according to local
media. The deal would see the staggered release of hostages captured on
7 October - the day of Hamas's unprecedented attack on southern Israel,
which killed 1,200 people - in return for a gradual withdrawal of
Israeli troops from the besieged enclave of Gaza. Skirmishes broke out
between protesters and police, with two people reportedly arrested and
14 injured as police used a sound cannon to disperse crowds. A water
cannon was also reportedly deployed for the protest - believed to have
been the biggest demonstration against Mr Netanyahu's government since 7
October - but not used. Families of hostages said time to get their
loved ones back was running out as they gathered in different cities
across Israel. About 120 of the 252 people taken are believed to still
be in captivity since 7 October, an attack that prompted a retaliatory
Israeli military campaign on Gaza which has left the territory in ruins,
led to widespread starvation and killed more than 36,000 people,
according to Palestinian health authorities.>>
